Separate the screen from the speaker
The caller name and number on your screen are pieces of displayed information. They do not establish that the speaker works for the organization named. TIAA's educational material discusses vishing and warns that caller ID can be spoofed. Familiar digits should not override an unusual request or pressure to act immediately.
The voice itself is also insufficient. A professional introduction, confident tone or knowledge of a personal detail can create credibility without proving authority. You do not need to decide during the call whether the person is genuine. You can end the conversation and obtain confirmation separately.
Listen for control of the conversation
Notice attempts to keep you on the line, prevent you from checking another source or make a pause seem dangerous. A caller might describe a security concern and then use that concern to justify a request for sensitive information. Treat the requested action as the important detail, even if the explanation sounds reassuring.
A transfer to a second speaker does not create independent confirmation when the original caller controls the transfer. Neither does a follow-up call automatically establish a new source. Choose your own confirmed contact route after leaving the unverified conversation.
- Requests to read a security code aloud.
- Pressure to reveal a password or recovery information.
- Instructions to keep the call secret.
- Claims that you must stay connected to prevent immediate harm.
- A demand to use only the number or link supplied by the caller.
End the call and start a separate contact
You can say that you will use a confirmed channel and then end the call. Do not use a number dictated by the caller as your proof. Locate contact information independently, using an established source you trust. Check the source rather than selecting a search advertisement by position alone.
Explain your concern through that independently located channel and follow its instructions. You do not need to repeat sensitive information to someone who initiated an unexpected call. An independent check should not depend on a credential, code or approval supplied inside the original conversation.
Use this explanation within its limits
Caller-ID spoofing is a general explanation of why screen information can be unreliable. It does not mean every unexpected call is fraudulent, and it cannot identify a particular caller. Avoid using a clean-looking display as an all-clear or a single odd detail as a definitive finding.
Teamjieletric cannot trace numbers, verify callers or investigate incidents. Do not submit a phone number, call recording or account information through our contact page. For a specific call, use a confirmed official reporting or contact channel appropriate to your situation.
Keep this in mind
Leave the caller's route, then choose your own confirmed source.
